Christopher Williams Day: A Recognition of Public Service, Dedication, and Community

By SPF Staff

Last month, Seattle Parks Foundation joined the City of Seattle in celebrating the retirement of long-time public servant Christopher Williams. In honor of Williams’ outstanding contributions to Seattle Parks and Recreation during his 33-year tenure, the Mayor and City Council proclaimed today, October 9, 2025, to be Christopher Williams Day! His leadership and dedication to creating accessible, thriving parks and recreational spaces has enriched the lives of all Seattle residents.
During his time with the Seattle Parks and Recreation Department, Williams served in a variety of leadership roles under five different mayors, including Acting Superintendent during three different transitional periods. As Acting Superintendent, he stepped up and provided the department with steady direction during challenging times, always leading with professionalism and grace.

As Deputy Superintendent and Chief of Staff, Williams managed the day-to-day operations of the city’s park and recreation system, which consistently ranked among the top 10 in the nation. He oversaw over 1,000 employees, 10 swimming pools, 26 community centers, and the maintenance of 6,200 acres of parkland across the city, including nearly 500 developed parks.
Williams’ leadership and dedication over the years extended beyond operations. He championed funding and resources to enhance and expand Seattle’s parks and recreation system, making the system more welcoming, accessible, and inclusive for all members of the community.
Time and time again, Williams provided visionary guidance to the department and the people of Seattle. He’s had pivotal roles in projects such as the ban on smoking in Seattle parks, the transformation of the city’s waterfront into a network of open and green spaces, and planning and hosting the Greater & Greener international conference which brought more than 1,200 parks and recreation professionals to the city.

A strong asset to the department, Williams grew up here in Seattle, graduated from Columbia University, and formerly served as a U.S. Marine Corps officer. His professional achievements are matched by his personal integrity and passion for giving back to his community. In 2011, he was recognized as the Municipal League of King County’s 2011 Public Employee of the Year and received the National Recreation and Park Associations R.O.S.E. Award for his significant contributions and exceptional commitment to his field and profession.
Thanks to dedicated professionals like Williams, Seattle’s parks continue to act as a shining beacon of nature, recreation, and rejuvenation for the community. We’re grateful to have worked alongside Seattle Parks and Recreation under Williams’ leadership and inspired by his decades-long commitment to public service.
Happy Christopher Williams Day!
