The Canary Collective Artist Gatherings create space for artists, especially disabled, chronically ill, queer, and financially precarious artists, to come together in ways that are soft, accessible, and rooted in mutual aid.
We’ve facilitated:
- theater and social justice workshops in Seattle parks
- filtered air and masks-required concerts featuring disabled and immunocompromised artists who played songs about labor rights and climate grief indoors and outdoors
- open-mic style gatherings on Zoom and in parks in which people share monologues, stand-up comedy, guitar cover songs, and essays they’ve been working on
- gatherings of “canary choir” members who make parody songs together and share on social media
The Canary Collective Artist Gatherings also host “Canary Calls for Community Compassion,” recurring artistic advocacy Zoom calls/occasional in person hybrid meetings during which we make artistic letters at home while snacking and listening to music and conversation about how to pressure decision makers from home!
How it works: Canary Calls for Community Compassion seek to make sure advocacy and activism are artistic and accessible to all! Senators and mayors need to hear from the people most impacted by issues, not just billionaire oil and war profiteer lobbyists! Anyone can join these calls and write a letter or make a call to your legislator – you don’t have to be an expert! – but if you want to just learn, you can mute your video and audio and just listen in.
