With help from the Wood Knot Carver and after thorough research, we have designed our very own mason bee house. We currently offer this product to our residential gardening clients, and now we are bringing a community service element to this work with help from the Seattle Parks Foundation.
The stages of our project are as follows :
1) Designate 10 community sites to receive a bee house and prepare a handout with information for our partners
2) Build 10 bee houses and install them for each of the community partners
3) Invite our community partners (staff, volunteers, students) to cocoon processing workshops in fall so they are equipped and empowered to assume ongoing stewardship responsibilities
Other goals we are hoping to accomplish include :
– connecting with the Xerces Society to complement the bee house installation with flowering pollinator plants
– conduct a small experiment to assess what plant stems make for good reeds (harvesting ourselves reduces costs)
