Recreating Henderson Street

A street design effort for and by the Rainier Beach community that will create a vision and improvement plan for S. Henderson St.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Recreating Henderson Street is a street design effort for and by the Rainier Beach community that will create a vision and improvement plan for S. Henderson St.

This builds upon the 2012 Rainier Beach neighborhood plan, the 2023 outreach by Rainier Beach Action Coalition and is funded by a planning grant through the Recreation and Conservation Office of Washington State.

We acknowledge that the city of Seattle and its green-spaces are on stolen Coast Salish land, specifically the ancestral land of the Duwamish, Suquamish, Stillaguamish, and Muckleshoot People. We recognize the stewardship of Seattle’s greenspaces by the Coast Salish people since time immemorial, the disruption of this work by colonization, and now endeavor to continue this work.

We make this acknowledgment to remind ourselves that, by being here today, we strive to remedy this injustice through our beliefs and actions in helping to steward our green spaces and communities in Seattle.

Project goals:

  • Activate + enhance spaces along S. Henderson St. for community, recreational, and opportunities.
  • Create a safe + vibrant cultural corridor that represents the diversity of Rainier Beach.
  • Feature art by neighborhood artists + youth.
  • Engage community, businesses, and property owners in the street design process.

We aim to install two locally-designed, permanent art installations at Seattle’s Hutchinson Playground. There are two components to the project, as prioritized by the community; (1) nature-themed art to mark the north entryway to the park, impacting the identity and recognition of the park; and (2) a welcome sign in multiple languages reflecting the extraordinarily diverse neighborhood where the park is located.

This project aligns with a complete $4.3M renovation of Hutchinson Playground that is already underway. Plans for the park’s renovation include a new play structure, new courts (including basketball, pickleball and tennis), new playfields (including baseball and soccer), and new accessible entrances and pathways throughout the park. The 60% design will be completed in Q3 of 2024, with construction happening in 2025.
