In 2014, the area around the Mount Baker Transit Center in Rainier Valley was upzoned for mixed-use development up to 125 feet, despite findings from multiple studies noting a lack of supporting infrastructure and neighborhood livability. The neighborhood lacks open space, local preschool children play in small fenced-off areas near Rainier Avenue, and the intersection with more than 10 lanes of east-west traffic is dangerous to cross.
The Friends of Mount Baker Hub Alliance are working with the city to create a neighborhood park to address open space gaps identified in the city’s Parks Gap Analysis and restore and preserve the historic Olmsted Boulevard system between Beacon Hill and Lake Washington Boulevard. Today this connection is interrupted by the dangerous intersection of Rainier Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Way. The goal is to create a safe, accessible green connection that better serves residents, shoppers, bicyclists, transit users, people with disabilities, and students.
