Friends of the Chilberg Link

Transforming the median on Chilberg Avenue into an attractively landscaped space for gathering with neighbors and growing food.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Located in a mixed-income neighborhood, the median on Chilberg Avenue SW leading to Emma Schmitz Memorial Overlook was once a grassy area with plum trees planted by the city in 1999. While community members still harvest fruit from the old trees, weeds and overgrown trees have become a hindrance.

Friends of the Chilberg Link aim to overhaul the median to create a space where people can enjoy easy fruit picking in an attractive food forest, as well as meet, sit, and discuss future gardening plans. Young fruit trees and native species are already growing in after the first phase of restoration. The group is planning to install water collection features and outdoor art to create a visible link to the overlook park.
