Friends of Rainier Beach Urban Farm and Wetlands

Building a local and sustainable food system is key to building the health, vitality, and resiliency of all communities. The Rainier Beach Urban Farm & Wetlands is a space that celebrates diversity and provides opportunities to educate, engage and connect community through sustainable urban farming and environmental stewardship.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The Rainier Beach Urban Farm and Wetlands located on the ancestral lands of the Duwamish Tribe and the Coast Salish Peoples. The idea for an urban farm originated with community residents and activists seeking to increase access to affordable quality food sources in the Rainier Beach Community and SE Seattle. The farm is a 10-acre site dedicated to organic food production and distribution, environmental education, and wetlands restoration co-operated by the Friends of Rainier Beach Urban Farm & Wetlands and Tilth Alliance.

We celebrate the diverse people and cultures of the Rainier Valley, working with community to gain skill and knowledge in food production, and work toward achieving food justice and environmental justice. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the inequities and disparities in accessing affordable quality food sources particularly by Black, Indigenous and other people of color. During the coming year we will focus on renovating our greenhouses to increase year-round food production and provide growing space for community partners to support their role in creating a holistic and sustainable food environment.
