Since the opening of The Garden of Allah in 1945, Seattle has had more than 215 LGBTQ oriented small businesses. These businesses created the safe space needed for Seattle’s LGBTQ community to develop and grow. This project documents and celebrates these small businesses and the work of their owners in a readily accessible GIS (Geographic Information System) based online archive to ensure that our stories and history are preserved, celebrated, and readily accessible for the public to explore.
We are building a digital map paired with archival galleries made up of news stories, ads, images, documents, personal narratives, and memories to create a lasting online resource. Each image or document captures a moment in time showcasing the history and evolution of our spaces along with the events and milestones that have woven together to form our collective experience.
