Get to Know Us: Q&A with Anna Guthrie

By Yordanos Tesfazion

We have a small but mighty team here at Seattle Parks Foundation, with dedicated and knowledgeable staff ready to help our fiscal partners achieve their goals.

Our Program Coordinator Anna Guthrie came to SPF after teaching English and working in manta ray research in Indonesia. She also has a background in directing programming and volunteer development for an intercultural exchange program. Now, Anna is a main point of contact for our fiscally sponsored partners and coordinates administrative back-end services for all of their projects.

You’ve been with SPF for over 3 years. How has your job evolved or changed over time?
When I first started, we weren’t holding any in-person events, due to COVID. We have been building up more in-person events and support for partners, including the annual partner celebration in the summer, and an annual orientation for new partners. We have just recently added a networking event for partners to be able to meet one another. It is great to meet folks that I work with in-person and see them connect with other partners as well!

You joined the team right after coming back from being abroad in Indonesia. How did your experiences working abroad shape how you approach your current role?
While living abroad, I learned to be very flexible and adaptable to changing situations, which I find important in my work. Every partner and project is unique, with different needs, goals, and challenges. I like problem-solving and learning how each partner needs to be supported.

As a Project Coordinator, you play a crucial role in ensuring our fiscally sponsored partners receive the information they need to successfully meet requirements, deadlines, and complete their projects. What are your favorite things about your job?
I often work with partners who are new to the world of grants and fiscal sponsorship. They sometimes feel nervous, overwhelmed, or unsure of how the project will work out in the end. After all, it’s something brand new! My favorite part about my job is seeing these community leaders move to a place of excitement and confidence and decide to apply for another grant or source of funding to keep the project growing and moving forward!

You are often an initial point of contact for our new partners, and you introduce them to our fiscal sponsorship program offerings. What are some of the most important things new partners should know about working with SPF?
The SPF Partner Portal is an excellent resource for partners, new and experienced! In addition to easy access to forms you will need, like the Partner Payment Request form, you can also find a growing list of resources to help you develop your project. You can find everything from budget tracking templates to event planning guides, to grant opportunities! We are always working to update and add new resources, so it is a great place to check back on as your project grows!

Most of us have our go-to spots somewhere in and around Seattle. Are there any unique hidden gems that you’ve found since moving here?
There is a little beach that I love, not too far from Discovery Park, that has a gorgeous view of the sunset over the Cascades. It is also an amazing spot for paddleboarding, swimming, and watching the harbor seals and other Salish Sea wildlife.

Gloomy skies and rain (and sometimes snow!) can make this time of year difficult for many folks. Do you have any life hacks that help you get through the winter?
In addition to living in Indonesia, I’ve also lived in Sweden. I’ve carried over the cozy winter strategies of lots of coffee, treats, and candles. Winter is my board game season, which is fun to do with friends! I enjoy being out in the snowy mountains, snowshoeing and skiing, and if we are lucky enough to get snow in Seattle, I love a nighttime snow walk. It’s so magical!

Thank you, Anna, for sharing more about yourself with us!
