Roxhill Park serves the South Delridge and Roxhill neighborhoods adjacent to Westwood Village shopping center, and is the largest open space in this economically and socially diverse section of southwest Seattle. Over the years, our park trails and unique wetlands have deteriorated, causing fear and avoidance by the people of all ages and backgrounds who are served by this large, underused open space, which is the headwaters of Longfellow Creek.
Duwamish Alive Coalition and American Rivers are working together to engage nearby neighbors and local schools in the restoration of the special wetlands environment. We are working closely with the City of Seattle to design and pilot a solution to restore the natural function to the peat wetland by capturing and filtering stormwater runoff and plant appropriate native trees. As the wetland is drying and degrading from urbanization and climate change, it has lost much of its healthy ecosystem including the loss of peat with its high level of carbon sequestration. Returning stormwater runoff to the wetland will also decrease the flooding of Longfellow Creek impacting community residents as Roxhill Bog is the headwaters of the creek.
