Youth-led Environmental Advocacy for the Duwamish River

We are “Juntos, Si Podemos Cuidar Nuestro Río Duwamish” also known as “Together, we can care for our Duwamish River.” We are a youth-led community project of Duwamish Valley Sustainability Group that raises awareness of the contamination in the Duwamish River.

Due to the economic and industrial growth that the city of Seattle experienced in the last 100 years, the Duwamish River has suffered heavy pollution. The last 5 miles of the Duwamish River, before entering Elliot Bay, is considered one of the most polluted areas of all US Rivers, mainly affecting the towns South Park and Georgetown. The pollution is so dangerous that most Seafood is not safe for human consumption.

Throughout this project we have worked with 6 bilingual youth from the Duwamish Valley to create videos that we post on our Facebook page. The youth were not only in the videos, they also helped film them. Behind the scenes all of the youth participated in the process, from production, directing and other roles. The content in our videos vary from youth introductions of themselves, our project, interviewing experts from the Duwamish River, informing the community about Source Control and more.

What is Source Control?

🤓Do you know what’s the first step in getting our Duwamish River clean and healthy again?

👩‍🔬The experts taught us about SOURCE CONTROL, it’s the process of controlling the source of contaminants that flow into the river.

🔎This is important because before we clean the river, we need to make sure it won’t get contaminated again.

😍Share this video and help us spread the word. We had ton of fun making this video, hope you enjoy it!

Connection to our Project’s mission:

Many in the fishing community from the Duwamish Valley are unaware of the existence of WA state fishing regulations and recommendations for safe fishing, being a serious problem especially for our non-English speaking or English learning community. Although there are written documents translated in different languages, the fishing community has stated that it would be ideal for them to receive this information through other media such as videos. This project has shared this information using the videos prepared by the University of Washington. Youth also provided assistance in the making of the factsheets created to share with the community in our future events.

The Washington State Department of Ecology is responsible for controlling the contamination of the Duwamish River from industrial operations and Seattle Public Utilities is responsible for monitoring the rainwater sewerage network. These institutions do not develop training for the Duwamish Valley community about good environmental protection habits to minimize this problem. From this, this project is focusing on two issues through releasing six videos and six written articles to educate and empower our community using social networks and other mass media.

💪Teamwork makes Dreamwork

Looking to the Future:

As youth members of the Duwamish Valley, we have been able to engage with our communities in ways that are personal and meaningful. These videos are just one example of creative and powerful tools to inform and educate, and ultimately lead to a cleaner, safer Duwamish River. Looking into the future we would love to continue working with our youth and spread awareness on how individuals can be more conscious about the Duwamish river’s cleanup. Please support this work by sharing the videos with your communities. Also, consider making a contribution to the Duwamish Valley Sustainability Group to continue to empower youth in South Park and Georgetown to become leaders and educators.
