Youth Take Action on Indoor Air Quality

A youth-driven project to take action on air pollution in Georgetown and South Park

Project Description

Georgetown and South Park, two communities in the Duwamish Valley, are plagued by air pollution from industry and trucking. The valley has the highest childhood asthma hospitalization rates in the city, and life expectancy for residents is 13 years shorter than for those in wealthier parts of Seattle. Bricktree, a Duwamish Valley-focused company, engages in community-based environmental justice projects through partnerships. This project teaches Duwamish Valley youth how to build their own vegetated trellis systems—green walls—to improve air quality in and around homes, and it trains them to teach this skill to other community members.
