ROAR Mobile Farm Stand

Connecting communities with sustainably grown produce, facilitating education, and creating opportunities to come together through the shared experience of food and nourishment

Project Description

Roots of All Roads (ROAR) is a nonprofit pop-up farm stand that operates Tuesdays through Fridays from June to October in four South Seattle neighborhoods and at two community health clinics. We also participate in community events and resource fairs on Saturdays during the summer. We source produce from small farms in Washington that use sustainable practices, particularly farms owned by people of color, women, LGBTQA people, beginning farmers, and urban and King County producers. The produce is aggregated and sold to us at wholesale prices, which enables us to sell it more affordably.

ROAR’s model seeks to fill gaps in our urban food system. Because of our unique approach to sourcing and sales, we fall outside the guidelines for many institutional food access programs, including WIC and the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program. We develop partnerships and find creative ways to work around established channels, and we advocate for policies and programs that improve healthy food access. Additional funding will help us bring healthy food to more communities with demonstrated desire and need, increase awareness of and marketing opportunities for small farmers, build community-based support for healthy eating and a stronger local food system, elevate the visibility of neighborhood leaders, and provide green-sector jobs.
