Georgetown Urban Farm and Forest (GUFF)

Addressing the food desert in Georgetown by growing organic vegetables to offset the overwhelming environmental stressors that neighborhood residents deal with every day

Project Description

Founded in 2015 on a corner of South Seattle College’s Georgetown campus, the Georgetown Urban Farm and Forest (GUFF) is expanding to include community green space, urban farm education, and youth involvement. Continued development will create a beautiful space where individuals and families can learn about growing food and enjoy one of Georgetown’s rare green spaces. The GUFF could connect the pedestrian and bicycle trail that runs through the college to the Seattle Department of Transportation property to the north.

Moving forward, we aim to engage young people in designing expansions to the farm and growing foods that represent the ethnic diversity of the community. The GUFF will provide opportunities for positive social engagement and show how community can lead to positive change. It will also be an example of how all community members can learn organic and sustainable approaches to growing food—such as using guilds, companion planting, remediation through mycological systems (mushrooms), and permaculture methods.
