Dr. Jose Rizal Park Stewards

Our goal is to build on the legacy of Dr. Jose Rizal, the Filipino national hero, to create a welcoming experience for all.

Project Description

Dr. Jose Rizal Park is an international park located in Seattle’s South End neighborhood, at the tip of Beacon Hill. This year, our team of six stewards will host several volunteer events, while working with the Filipino community and Friends of Dr. Jose Rizal. Last year, we set the groundwork by making improvements to the park’s 52-tree apple orchard, off-leash area, and forest, while maintaining an active, positive presence in the upper park. We are planning on improving the off-leash area trail system with suitable gravel, expanding the orchard into a sustainable food forest, and establishing survival rings for native trees in the woods.

Project Resources

  • Dr. Jose Rizal Park offers spectacular views of Seattle, the Olympics, and Elliott Bay.

  • Sunset is a popular time to visit here, looking out into the forest.

  • The largest of the three stands of apple trees is fully supported for urban agriculture.

  • A crew cleans the woods. A variety of opportunities match the skills of volunteers.

  • A crew doing maintenance work on the park's trails ensures access through the rainy season.

  • Apple harvesters in the wine sap stand - over 20 varieties of apples grow in the park.
