DESCRIPTION:Join us for a restoration work party at Discovery Park. \nLizard Haven overlooks the south meadow\, Puget Sound and the Olympic range; there’s not a more picturesque restoration site in Seattle. Come help us prepare it for more native plants later this fall. SUMMARY:Conversations with Garfield Super Block Artists: Jamie Colacecchi & Teruko Nimura
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening to discuss art\, culture\, and history! \nMeet the artists who will bring the Garfield Super Block to life! 16 selected artists with ties to the Central District are creating original artwork to be installed in Garfield Park commemorating seven historical cultures that lived and thrived in this neighborhood. \nJamie Colacecchi\, a whimsical fiber and mixed media artist deeply who is rooted in the cherished traditions of her family. Beyond artistic pursuits\, she is an educator and demonstrator; igniting curiosity at fairs\, festivals\, farms and schools with her trusty spinning wheel or a bag of clay by her side. Colacecchi believes in engaging the senses: the textures of paint and glaze\, the warmth of yarn\, the smells of a shared meal. She creates pieces that are meant to be worn\, sipped from and touched\, making her work a song of love\, creativity and the sheer delight of bringing people together in shared moments of joy and connection. \nTeruko Nimura (b. 1978\, based in University Place\, Washington) creates drawings\, sculptures\, site specific installations\, pottery\, public artworks and multi-layered community engagement projects that invite discovery and introspection through experiential connection. Her Japanese and Filipino cultural heritage is a foundational lens for her explorations of collective memory and trauma\, identity\, motherhood\, and the climate crisis. \nGenerously hosted by Metier Brewing Company\, this free event offers the opportunity to learn about the artists and their work through this series of summer events. Artists will discuss their designs and the process of creating original public art\, as well as the history of the Central District and their cultural heritage. \nEvents take place on Tuesdays\, from 6 pm to 7:30 pm August 20 – September 17. \nRegister \nLearn more about Golden Gardens Park here.

SUMMARY:Leafline Walking Tour and Bike Ride in Tacoma
DESCRIPTION:This event will directly precede the Washington Bike Walk Roll Summit. \nOur partners with Leafline Trails Coalition will offer a walking tour along the Prairie Line Trail – the western end of the historic Northern Pacific Railroad\, which was built upon the lands of the S’puyaləpabš (Puyallup Tribe). In 2019\, the City of Tacoma officially opened the downtown segment of the trail along the tracks of the retired Prairie Line. It links Tacoma’s waterfront\, downtown\, University\, and Brewery Districts. \nLeafline will be partnering with Cascade Bicycle Club (which hosts the Summit). They anticipate having local speakers to talk about the trail. \nThey will also offer a 21 mile bicycle ride that rolls along the Prairie Line Trail and makes a loop in South Tacoma before coming back into town along the Pipeline Trail. This is a great intermediate introductory ride for folks unfamiliar with Tacoma and highlights some of the amazing trail work that has been done in this area over the past few years. \nWalking Route (.3 miles)\nBike Route (20.3 miles) \nStart location: Prairie Line Trail\, just outside the Tacoma Art Museum in Downtown Tacoma \nLearn More + Register \nLearn more about Leafline Trails Coalition here.

SUMMARY:Conversations with Garfield Super Block Artists: Gabrielle Wildheart & Ria Torres
\nGabrielle Wildheart is an award-winning public artist who paints large-scale murals for urban spaces. Her practice is rooted in social awareness\, public engagement\, and equitable representation. Through community partnerships\, she brings creative empowerment to underserved spaces. Previous clients include Seattle Art Museum\, Bellevue Art Museum\, and the Hague City Government (NL). Wildheart received classical training in portraiture from the Florence Academy of Art in Italy\, and an MFA from the University of the Arts\, London. She currently exhibits nationally and works from her studio on Vashon Island\, WA. \nAt their core as an artist\, Ria Pacita-Torres experiences art as a powerful and necessary tool in the struggle for genuine change because of its power to give rise\, form\, and shape to collectives and communities\, especially amongst those feeling lost in diaspora and forced migration. Pacita is a second generation Filipino-American originating from the Central District and graduating from Garfield High School in 2021. Always enthusiastic to learn and create more\, their work includes\, creating paintings\, charcoal drawings\, clay ceramics\, film photography\, linoleum stamps\, screen printing\, jewelry\, and rug-making. Pacita has been featured in two galleries\, an artist talk\, and in interviews. They have been commissioned for book graphics\, paintings\, and designs by non-profits\, local businesses\, individuals\, and more.
