Honoring Laughter and Service
from Linda Dagg
On September 17, 2008 the Lloyd Nordstrom Children’s Hospital guild dedicated a bench in memory of the late King County Prosecutor, Norm Maleng. Norm’s widow, Judy, has been a long-time member of The Lloyd Nordstrom guild. The guild worked with Seattle Parks Foundation to raise the necessary money to install Norm’s bench at Karen’s Place Playground at the Magnolia Playfield. Karen’s Place was named in honor of the Maleng’s daughter, Karen, who was tragically killed in a 1989 sledding accident.
Judy attended the dedication ceremony, along with her son Mark Maleng. Norm was a steadfast supporter of Children’s Hospital and the guild’s work to raise money for uncompensated care at Children’s. The setting was perfect. Norm, Judy, and Mark made frequent visits to this wonderful play area to not only remember Karen, but to hear the laughter from the children who have gleefully played here through the years. Having Norm’s Bench at Karen’s Place gave the guild an opportunity to honor the memory of their great friend.
Shown on the bench are Judy Maleng and Mark Maleng with a picture of Norm sitting between them. Joining them at the Sept 17 dedication ceremony were (front row, from left) Sandra Due, Sheila Magnano, Dina Wells, Linda Dagg, Michael Magnano, and Chuck Dagg; and (second row) Marie Cain, Lee Anne Mitchell, Sandra Rook, and Julie Elliott; and (back row) Mimi McHugh, Marilyn Grant, Marybeth Alwood, Suzy Minto, and Karen Bakken.
