Seward Park Playground

Location: 5898 Lake Washington Blvd S

On Sunday, October 24, 2010, Seattle Parks Foundation, Seward Park Playground Improvement Foundation, neighbors, and friends celebrated the Grand Opening of the new Seward Park Playground.

The installation of the playground was a work several years in progress. Once the site of a deteriorating pirate boat, Seward Park's play area drew a group of concerned community members together, who formed the Seward Park Playground Improvement Foundation (SPPIF). SPPIF partnered with Seattle Parks and Recreation, Audubon Society, Friends of Seattle's Olmsted Parks, and Friends of Seward Park to spearhead the installation of a new playground. SPPIF also commissioned Kristin Tollerfson to create an art component for the play area.

Johnson Southerland was commissioned to design the new play area and the design was completed and approved after extensive public input. With Seattle Parks Foundation as the fiscal sponsor, SPPIF successfully raised over $156,000 for this unique and worthy project. Designed to blend into the adjacent old growth forest, mountain views, trails, and Audubon Center, the new play area is a citywide attraction!

The success of this unique project is a testament to what Seward Park means to this community.  More than just a playground, the area is an innovative showcase that combines active play, environmental awareness, and art appreciation.
