Junction Plaza Park

Location: 42nd SW and SW Alaska Street

Seattle Parks Foundation, Friends of Junction Plaza Park, West Seattle Junction Association, city officials and other neighbors celebrated the grand opening of Junction Plaza Park June 29, 2010. Visit our Facebook album for photos from the ribbon-cutting event and see the official press release for more details.

Junction Plaza Park is a one-third acre park east of the intersection of SW Alaska Street and California Avenue SW.  The site was acquired by Seattle Parks and Recreation in 2005 with funding from the Pro Parks Levy, a Department of Neighborhoods Matching Fund Grant and generous contributions from the community.  This project created an urban green space in the heart of the West Seattle Junction business district for people of all ages to enjoy.

As West Seattle Junction continues to experience rapid growth and development, the park installation took place at a crucial juncture. Just across the street several developments are planned or under construction, including QFC, Whole Foods, and several housing developments. With approximately 1,000 new residents slated to soon settle within walking distance from Junction Plaza Park, this green space is increasingly significant.

In addition to businesses and new residents moving into The Junction, the Alaska House, a nine-story residential facility for low-income seniors, lies directly adjacent to the north end of the park and is a great asset to its residents.

The Friends of Junction Plaza Park and the West Seattle Junction Association championed this project and were deeply involved in its success.  Susan Melrose, the neighborhood lead, invited Seattle Parks Foundation to assist them in completing Junction Plaza Park and we were excited to work with the community to create this wonderful green space and community plaza.
