Bands of Green
Bands of Green is a comprehensive plan for the continuing development of bicycle and pedestrian trails, boulevards and linear parks in Seattle. Originally conceived in 1990, the report was re-commissioned by Seattle Parks Foundation in 2006 and has recently been updated to include progress made and possibilities on the horizon. It was developed by Cedar River Associates with input from a variety of sources, including: Seattle Parks Department, Seattle Department of Transportation, Friends of Seattle’s Olmsted Parks, Seattle Department of Planning and Development and 37 neighborhood plans coordinated by the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods.
The new Bands of Green update comes at an opportune time and contains exciting recommendations and opportunities for Seattle Parks Foundation to work with neighborhood bicycle advocacy groups, funding partners and city agencies toward new bike boulevards and green connections between parks. Recent efforts to curtail traffic and slow global warming, as well as health studies linking obesity to physical inactivity, point to the need for increased pedestrian and bicycle trail systems. In addition, green connections between parks can enhance urban habitat and can make existing parks and green spaces more viable. Bands of Green is consistent with Olmsted design principles, the City of Seattle's Bicycle Master Plan, Open Space 2100, and the future Pedestrian Master Plan.
