Seattle Parks Levy Passes!

Thank you Seattle for supporting parks!

Seattle Proposition 2, the Parks and Green Spaces Levy, passed with overwhelming support due in large part to the grassroots support for open space, recreation, habitat protection, trails, and vibrant neighborhoods.

With 61% of voters in support, there will now be $146 million available over the next six years for improving existing public parks and securing new green space in our most underserved neighborhoods.

Statement of Support
Seattle Parks Foundation has worked since 2001 to direct additional resources to our public parks and green spaces.  This November, the 2008 Parks and Green Spaces Levy provides an important opportunity to renew our commitment to parks through a critical source of public investment.  Seattle Parks Foundation strongly supports Proposition 2, the 2008 Parks and Green Spaces Levy, as a means to create a more vibrant community.

Dedicated public funding for parks is the best way to invest in the future of our urban open spaces.  The 2008 Parks and Green Spaces Levy will provide an additional $145 million over six years to improve our existing park system and acquire new land for future parks.

The projects identified in the 2008 Parks and Green Spaces Levy came directly from citizen plans to address the green space needs of Seattle’s neighborhoods.  The diverse range of projects in the levy includes habitat restoration, play area improvements, recreation fields, and green connections, supporting the many ways that Seattleites use parks.

With the successful 2000 Pro Parks Levy expiring this year and the need to provide more opportunities for recreation in our increasingly dense neighborhoods, it is critical that we continue to invest in parks in order to maintain the livability of our city. The 2008 Parks and Green Spaces Levy takes action today and leaves a enduring legacy of a livable Seattle.
